Santa Barbara City College is said to be haunted by the ghost of a woman in a white shawl. The mysterious apparition has been seen close to an ocean bluff on the campus.
Stories say the figure floats over the lawn about six inches off the ground, and that when she reaches the edge of the cliff she vanishes in a blue flash of light.
No one has confirmed who she is or why she haunts the location.

Stories told about her
The earliest listing found is on Weird California’s White Lady Ghosts page, which is undated and lists the site as “Santa Barbara Community College, Cliff Drive.” It describes a lady in a white flowy dress and white shawl on the grassy area closest to the ocean, usually about an hour after sunset. In some tellings she vanishes in a blue misty light, and in others she runs toward the edge of the bluff. It says her origins “remain a mystery.” The tales it mentions range from a Native American woman killed by Spanish soldiers to a woman who died in childbirth and searches for her husband, and it adds that some students describe her as a woman who died by suicide. None of these is sourced, and this guide does not treat any of them as fact. The bluff is a real hazard, so please stay well back from the edge.
The original source of the Weird California entry is unknown, and no dated sighting or named witness was found.
A possible, unproven link: Doña Inocencia
A Santa Barbara Independent cover story from October 2025 connects a woman in white seen “near the harbor and Santa Barbara City College” with the legend of Doña Inocencia. That legend comes from “The Haunted Rock at Santa Barbara,” a ghost story by V. Forward Russell in The Overland Monthly in 1873. It is a tale of a young woman who dies after a forged letter, set at Castle Rock, a rocky point at the end of today’s Castillo Street. The Independent describes her as a woman in white who looks out to sea, as if waiting for a ship. The article does not say the college’s ghost is Inocencia. Russell’s story reads as literature, and the Castle Rock site is not on the campus lawn, so this is a suggestive parallel and not a documented origin.
The name and the campus
The college’s official name is Santa Barbara City College. According to its history page, it began in 1909 as Santa Barbara Junior College, was reorganized in 1946 and took its present name in July 1959, the summer it moved from the Alhecama campus downtown to the 74-acre Mesa bluff, the former site of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Some listings call it “Santa Barbara Community College,” which is not its name. Because the college has been on the bluff only since 1959, any story that belongs to this campus is no older than that unless it was first told about the site.
