Hood College – Frederick, MD: Brodbeck Music Hall, a Lightning Fire and Campus Ghost Stories

Brodbeck Music Hall at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, is the campus’s oldest building, built in 1868 as a gathering place for German settlers. It is also the center of the college’s ghost stories and has been closed since a lightning fire in September 2021. Hood’s own writers say no concrete evidence supports the stories. This guide sorts history from folklore.

What the record says

Hood’s Brodbeck page says the hall was built in 1868 in the shape of a German cross as a social gathering place for early German settlers. It later served as a florist shop, a farmer’s home and a warehouse before the Woman’s College of Frederick bought it in 1897. Hood’s People Behind the Names page says the college renamed what was then College Hall for Congressman Andrew R. Brodbeck in 1916, after he paid for its remodeling and enlargement.

On Sept. 9, 2021, the fire alarm sounded at 1:49 a.m. Hood’s news release says about 75 firefighters responded and nobody was hurt. WTOP reported that fire officials ruled lightning the cause, and the student paper The Blue and Grey said the fire stayed on the third floor but destroyed the cupola. In April 2026 the paper reported that a $10.8 million renovation had begun, with exterior work due by fall and interior work to follow.

The legends

Brodbeck Hall. Hood’s 2021 “School Spirits” article says witnesses have reported laughter, music and footsteps from empty rooms, orbs of light on the stage, locked doors and lights turning on and off. A contractor said his boots kept moving, and the off-limits third floor is said to hold a figure at a window.

Memorial Hall’s elevator. The same article tells of a ghost named Sheila who makes the elevator open, bang shut and carry riders to floors they did not choose. Hood’s folklore page says students did not mind it.

Shriner Hall. The 2021 article places a restless ghost named John on the fourth floor. In a 2024 Blue and Grey report, college archivist Mary Atwell called her favorite “Steve,” said to be a Naval Academy midshipman who is friendly and quiets when asked.

Other stories. Hood’s pages also list a girl in white near Coffman Chapel and violent student-death legends. This guide does not retell those.

What the record does not support

  • A single story. Hood’s pages disagree. The 2021 article places a laundry-room legend in Meyran Hall, while the folklore page places it in Shriner. Atwell said the stories vary with the telling.
  • Brodbeck’s age. The folklore page says 1840. The Brodbeck page, the People Behind the Names page and the 2021 student report say 1868.
  • Evidence. The 2021 article says no concrete evidence exists that the stories are based on real events and calls them most likely the product of imaginative alumni.
  • The fire as a ghost story. The sources describe a lightning strike on the cupola during a thunderstorm and do not connect the fire to any legend.

Visiting

Hood is a working college at 401 Rosemont Ave. Residence halls are private, so stay outside. Brodbeck was off-limits after the fire and is under renovation, so no one should expect access. A “Hauntings at Hood” talk was held at the library on Oct. 24, 2024; no 2026 version was found.
