The Watts Hall dormitory on this campus is said to be haunted by the ghost of oddly enough, a mule. Affectionately know as “Old Coaly”, he was one of the mules that was used to build the university back in the 1850s. Coaly lived to a ripe old age, and when he passed away his remains were preserved and displayed in the Old Main Building. After the building was destroyed by a fire in the early 1900s, the remains were stored in the basement of Watts Hall. In the 1960s, Old Coaly’s skeleton was once again put on display, this time in the Agricultural Building. Since then, Old Coaly’s ghost has been seen standing in the doorway outside the storage room back in Watts Hall. Sometimes his noisy braying can be heard coming from behind the locked door.
Another haunted spot on the campus is Runkle Hall. Here, a third-floor room was the scene of some poltergeist activity in the fall of 1994. An RA reported loud banging sounds, lighting blinking on and off, and a disembodied voice speaking incoherently. She also said her mattress and pillow were rising and falling in a regular pattern. These incidents were never explained.
